Ready To Serve Christ Children’s Church Lesson Game

Today, I’m posting a game you can use for this lesson, Ready to Serve Christ. Use the italics as an example of what you can say to the children. Next week, Ill post a way for the children to learn the memory verse and a Bible story to use with this lesson.

Focus Point:  God wants us to be Ready to live the Christian life, Expecting God to move and Determined to share the Gospel.

Goal:  Children will learn to look for opportunities to serve God with boldness..

Focus Verse: Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13

Game Time:  Getting Ready for Emergencies

Items needed:  2 oversized pairs of pants, 2 oversized shirts, 2 pairs of large boots, 2 hats

There are a lot of things we get ready for.  Can you name a few?  Have the children name some things we need to get ready for.  Fire fighters have to get ready to go to a fire at a moment’s notice.  Even in the middle of the night, if the fire alarm sounds, fire fighters have to jump up, get dressed and run to the fire truck in only a few seconds.  Today we are going to see how good we would be as fire fighters.

Divide all of the children into two teams for a clothing relay.  The game starts when you sound the alarm by yelling Emergency.  The first child on each team will get dressed in pants, a shirt, a pair of boots and a hat and run to the other side of the room and back making noises like a fire truck.  Then the child will take off the clothes as the next child puts them on and does the same.  The team who finishes first wins.

It’s very important for fire fighters to be ready when there’s a fire.  It’s even more important for Christians to be ready to do what God wants.

Easter Sunday Lesson (Game and Skit)

Lesson: Jesus Dies For Our Sin & Rises Again

Theme: Jesus Wants Us to Be Saved

Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:4  He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.

Game Suggestion:

Easter Egg Relay: Roll Easter Eggs with their noses or have them run the relay with an egg under their chin and drop it in a bucket without breaking it.

Skit: Jesus Enters Jerusalem

Characters: Jesus. Jewish man who tells the Story

Props: Cave, temple with curtain, sound effects CD with thunder (easy to download from computer if you don’t have one), movie clip of Jesus’ crucifixion (Some movies are more graphic than others. Make sure your clip is age appropriate.)

Jewish man dressed in robe and turban comes out and says something similar to this.

It has been quite a week. I told you last week how Jesus came to Jerusalem. He claimed to be the Son of God. The religious leaders didn’t like that. They had him arrested. He was tried and executed. Show video of Jesus dying on the cross.

That happened 3 days ago. It was a sad day. I don’t mind telling you I believed Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God. But now that he’s dead, I guess it’s over. I’ve been sitting here near his tomb. I don’t know why. The religious leaders must have been right. Play thunder sound effects. What was that? I hear something. Jesus emerges from the cave. Did you see that? He’s alive. Jesus rose from the grave. He is the Son of God. Man bows at Jesus’ feet.

Because there are such a variety of messages and object lessons for Easter, instead of having part 2 to this lesson, I will post an object lesson, message, or story every day for the next few days to give you an opportunity to put your own Easter message together.

Palm Sunday Lesson (Jesus Enters Jerusalem) – Part 1

This is part 1 of a lesson to use on Palm Sunday, the second in the Easter series. Part 2 will by posted tommorow.

Lesson: Jesus Enters Jerusalem

Theme: God Wants Children To Praise Him

Verse: Matthew 21:16(ICB) … You have taught children and babies to sing praises’?

Game Suggestion:

Pin the tail on the donkey

Palm Branch Limbo: Children do the limbo under palm branches.

Skit: Jesus Enters Jerusalem

Characters needed: Jesus, children, Pharisee, Jewish man who tells the story

Man dressed in robe and turban comes out and says something similar to this.

Remember how I told you Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. This week he’s riding into Jerusalem on a donkey like a king, and I hear everyone’s bringing palm branches to wave at him and yelling Son of David. Here he comes. Let’s get our palm branches ready. Everyone wave and yell Hosanna. (Jesus comes from the back down the aisle. The man encourages everyone to yell and wave palm branches. Jesus goes to the temple.)

That was exciting. But wait until you hear what happened next. When Jesus got to the temple, he was made because some men were selling outside and cheating the people. He knocked over the tables. (Jesus knocks over the tables & says “It is written, my house will be called a house of prayer. You have made it into a den of thieves.”

(2 children come up to Jesus and praise him. The Pharisee says “Do you hear what those children are saying? Tell them to be quiet.” Jesus says, “Have you never heard the scripture, “You have taught children and babies to sing praises.””)

Did you hear that? Jesus wants children to praise him. Most people in Jerusalem want children to be seen and not heard. But not Jesus. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next.

The Resurrection And The Life Lesson (Lazarus Brought Back To Life) – Part 1

For the next week, I’ll be posting lessons for the 2 weeks leading up to Easter Sunday and Easter Sunday. You can make this series special by decorating your children’s church to look like Jerusalem with a cave on one side and a curtain with columns symbolizing the temple on the other. Also find characters to play the parts for the skit.

This is the lesson about Lazarus for two weeks before Easter.

Theme: Jesus Gives Us Life Eternal

Verse: John 11:25 Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will have life even if he dies.” ICB

Mummy Game:

Object: rolls of toilet paper

Have two teams. Give each team a roll of toilet paper. Give the teams 5 minutes to wrap their Lazarus in grave clothes. Whoever has the best mummy at the end of the 5 minutes wins.

Skit: Lazarus Story

Characters: Jesus, Lazarus, Jewish Man who tells the Story

Objects: cave, toilet paper, Bible costumes

Man dressed in robe and turban comes out and tells how Jesus really stirred things up the last couple of weeks. He says something similar to this.

I live in Jerusalem, but I went to visit some friends in Bethany a few days ago. My friends told me a neighbor of theirs died. This man, Lazarus was a friend of Jesus, that prophet who’s been going around teaching about God and healing people. I heard about him but I never met him. Anyway, Lazarus had died, and Jesus didn’t even come to the funeral. Lazarus sisters were pretty upset about. Then four days later, Jesus showed up. (Jesus comes up to the cave.) I visited the cave with my friends so I saw him coming up the road. He didn’t look like a prophet. One of Lazarus sisters told him he should have been there. If he had, Lazarus wouldn’t have died. She probably figured Jesus would heal Lazarus.

Anyway Jesus said something really strange. He said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will have life even if he dies.”

I couldn’t believe it. Only God gives life. How could this man be the resurrection and life? And how can we live if we die. That just doesn’t make sense. Well let me tell you, that didn’t make me believe in him. First he doesn’t come to heal his friend. Then he doesn’t even come to the funeral. Then he says all this strange stuff about being the life.

But what happened next was even more amazing. Jesus told some men to roll the stone away from the cave door. They tried to tell him that the body would stink, but he wouldn’t listen. So they rolled the stone away. And let me tell you, it did stink. I’ve never smelled anything so bad. I would have left, but I wanted to see what Jesus was up to. He walked up to the cave. (Jesus walks up to the cave.) And he said something. (Jesus shout “Lazarus, come forth.” Lazarus comes out of the cave wrapped in toilet paper.)

I couldn’t believe it. Lazarus came back to life. Jesus told up to release him from his grave clothes. (Man unwraps Lazarus.) We had a big party to celebrate. I’d like to hear more about this Jesus. If he can bring people back to life, maybe he is who he says he is. Maybe he’s the Messiah, the one sent from God who has been promised. I’m going back to Jerusalem today, but I’d like to hear more about this Jesus.

Part 2 will have object lessons and the children’s sermon.

Fun, Simple Games For Children’s Ministry

If you’re looking for some games with little planning that you can do when service runs over, here are a few you can use.

Mummy Game:

Supplies: 2 rolls of toilet paper.

Choose 4 children for each team. One child on each team is the mummy. Start some music. The teams have until the music stops playing to wrap their mummies. The team with the best looking mummy wins.

Application: Mummies in the movies are dead, but they walk around and act like their alive. Scripture tells us to be alive in Christ and dead to sin. When we do that, we can be “spiritual mummies”.

Jesus says:

Suppies: None

Similar to Simon Says only you say Jesus says.

Application: We should always obey Christ and do what He says.

Get Rid of Sin

Supplies: Beach Balls

Have children divide up into two teams. Each teams sits or stands on their side of the room. Throw the balls out evenly and start the music. Tell the children that the balls represent sin. They want to get rid of them and bounce them to the other side. When the music stops, the team with the least balls wins.

Application: Just as we tried to get rid of those beach balls, we should get rid of the sin in our lives.

Fruit Basket

Supplies: Chairs formed in a circle. You should have one less chair than the number of kids.

Go around the circle and assign each child a fruit. Apples, Oranges, Bananas, Grapes, Pears. If there are less than 15 kids, only use three fruits. The child standing in the center of the circle is it and calls out a fruit. When a child’s fruit is called, he has to stand up and find another chair. When a child calls fruit basket, all the children have to find other chairs.

Application: Fruit of the Spirit
