Kids Entering the Presence of God Part 11 – The History of Children in Revival

 Share

Many across the nation and the world are praying for God to send us another mighty revival. Yet these same people ignore the ministry God has done through children throughout the ages. Almost every major move of God in the past has had children as a large part of that revival. Some revivals even started with children.

John Wesley mentioned in many of his journal entries how God moved among children while he was ministering.

May 5, 1737. Indeed about this time we observed the Spirit of God to move upon the minds of many of the children. They began more carefully to attend to the things that were spoken both at home and at church, an a remarkable seriousness appeared in their whole behavior and conversation.

August 30, 1758. I began meeting with the children in the afternoon, though with little hopes of doing them good; but I had not spoken long on our natural state before many of them were in tears, and five or six so affected, that they could not refrain from crying aloud to God. When I began praying, their cries increased, so that my voice was soon lost.

In 1741, George Whitfield visited Edinburg where he preached to boys at now spending their time in reading the Bible and books of piety, and exhorting their fellows to do the like.

In November, 1839, Rev. Murray McCheyne visited Dundee where he discovered 39 weekly prayer meetings taking place. Five of them were conducted by children and only had children attending.

Children’s prayer meetings also sprang up from 1874 to 1883 following D.L. Moody’s campaigns.

In April, 1868, Charles Haddon Spurgeon endorsed the ministry of children after he saw the move of God among many of them.

During the Brownsville Assembly of God revival of the 1990s, children were caught up in a spirit of intercession and would spend hours praying.

These are only a few of the accounts of God moving through children during revivals in the past. Imagine what God could do among children if we taught and encouraged children to enter the presence of God.

Kids Entering the Presence of God Part 10 – The Glory of God

Share

As we step into the Holy of Holies, we see the Ark of the Covenant. In the Old Testament, the Ark of the Covenant always represented the glory of God.

The Ark was four feet high, two feet long, and two feet wide and was made out of acacia wood. A gold molding was placed around it, and four gold rings were attached to it. Two gold poles went through the rings. The ark was carried by the poles since anyone who touched the ark would die.

The lid of the ark was called the mercy seat. This is where the blood sacrifice for the people was placed. Attached to the lid, hovering over the mercy seat, were two gold cherubim worshipping God with gold wings that touched.

The ark reminded the people of the glory and presence of God. But God’s presence and glory were never contained in a box. Psalm 72:19 says “Let the whole earth be filled with His glory.

There are many ways to help children understand the glory of God. Here are a few.

The Blanket: The word, glory, means the heaviness of God. One way to illustrate this is with a heavy blanket. Talk about how when you were a child, being wrapped in a heavy blanket would make you feel warm and safe. Being wrapped in the glory of God also makes us feel safe.

Draw Near to God: James 4:8 tells us to draw near to God for comfort. One way to illustrate this is with a bungee cord. Every time something bad happens, God wants to pull us close to Him to comfort us. We can resist the by pulling on the cord, but God is always drawing us to Him if we will allow Him to.

Pillar of Fire and Cloud: When the Israelites walked through the desert, God directed them with His glory. At night, He would appear as a pillar of fire that lit up the sky. In the daytime, God would appear as a cloud. He did this so He could guide them. As long as they followed Him, they would never be lost, and they would always be in the presence of God.

Mt. Sinai: Moses met with God on Mt. Sinai. God showed His presence through a cloud that covered the mountain. It was there that God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. But Moses wanted more and prayed “Show me your glory.” God answered that prayer and allowed Moses to see a part of His glory. He showed Moses His back. Today God wants to show children His glory. As they draw near to Him, He will draw near to them.

Kids Entering the Presence of God Part 9 – The Veil

Hebrews 4:16  Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Now we come to the entrance to the Holy of Holies where God’s presence dwells. In the tabernacle of Moses, a veil stood at the entrance. Nobody dared to go past this veil except the high priest. He only entered once a year to offer a sacrifice for the sins of the people, and he had to prepare himself to do that.

But today, we can boldly go into God’s presence. When Jesus died on the cross, the veil was ripped in two showing that His sacrifice was accepted once and for all.

There are still many ‘veils’ that can keep children from entering into God’s presence. Here are three.

Kids who don’t know God can’t enter into His presence. That’s why it’s so important to introduce children to God at an early age.

John 9:31  Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.

Kids who are embarrassed because their friends might make fun of them or because they might look foolish have a hard time entering the presence of God. This is why it’s important to teach children to be bold in their faith.

Luke 9:26  For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels.

Some kids won’t enter God’s presence because of stubbornness or pride.

Isaiah 66:2  But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.

It’s important to teach children that whatever hinders them from God’s presence, whatever veil is blocking their way, must be ripped in two. A great way to teach them this is to have a piece of cloth that’s easy to rip. Make a small cut to get it started. Have each child who wants to enter God’s presence rip the cloth in two.

Unfortunately there’s something else that hinders children from entering God’s presence – well meaning adults. Some adults will stop children from worshiping God because they might worship in a boisterous way or because they think the children don’t understand what they’re doing.

There are two Bible stories that address people who try to hinder worship.

The first is found in 2 Samuel 6. David came into the city with the Ark of the Covenant, the symbol of God’s presence, dancing and singing. Michael was embarrassed by David’s behavior and told him so. David told her he would not let her stop him but would look even more foolish in his worship. Michael was punished by God for hindering David and became barren.

The other story is found in Matthew 21:15-16. When Jesus entered the temple, children cried out to Him in praise. The religious leaders of the time told Jesus He should stop them. Jesus said, “From the lips of children and infants, God has ordained praise.” The word ordain in the Greek means to lead or to start.

God wants children to lead in praise and worship. We should lead them into doing this. It’s a dangerous thing to hinder the praise and worship of children.

Kids Entering the Presence of God Part 8 – The Golden Candlestick

John 8:12  Later, Jesus talked to the people again. He said, “I am the light of the world. The person who follows me will never live in darkness. He will have the light that gives life.”

The next piece of furniture in the inner court is the golden candlestick that gives light to the priests just as Christ is the light of the world.

Fruit:

John 15:5  “I am the vine, and you are the branches. If a person remains in me and I remain in him, then he produces much fruit. But without me he can do nothing.

Galatians 5:22-23   But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

The golden candlestick has nine cups made in the shape of almonds. These almonds represent the nine fruit of the Spirit. When children come into the presence of God, it’s important to teach them to stay attached to the vine, Jesus. If they do, they will display the nine fruit of the Spirit in their lives.

Oil:

Philippians 4:13  I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

These almond cups are filled with oil. Oil represents the anointing. The anointing is the ability God gives us to do what He has called us to do. The story of David and Goliath is a great way to illustrate the anointing to children. A boy can’t defeat a giant. It’s impossible. But God call David to defeat Goliath, and He gave him the ability to do so. God will always equip us with the anointing to do what He has called us to do.

Fire:

Luke 24:49  49 And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

Fire represents the gifts and manifestations of the Holy Spirit. It also represents Pentecost.
