Kidfest is a children’s event geared to 6 through 12 year olds. Under the coordination of the Church of God Department of Youth and Christian Education, Kidfest is a weekend designed to give children an opportunity to come together with kids from other churches in various cities and states for the purpose of worship and having a good time. Kidfest also models new methodology for children’s ministry, enabling children’s ministry workers and leaders to see new approaches. The event also provides opportunities for networking and encouragement for children’s ministry personnel.
Patterned after Winterfest, Kidfest is a weekend retreat type of event for children. Services contain age appropriate ministry utilizing some of the latest and greatest as well as tried and true ministry methods. Pentecostal in nature, relevant and fast paced, the services impact all who attend. Gifted and talented children are also involved in the services. The services are powerful and the results go well beyond the meetings as they have a dramatic impact on the local church, whenever the children return home.
The schedule includes four services, beginning with Friday night, continuing on Saturday morning and Saturday evening, and concluding on Sunday morning. During the day on Saturday, groups can participate in an outing to the amusement park in the area, or to a different activity of the leader’s choosing. Everyone stays in a hotel during the event so the children have the opportunity to experience hotel living as well.
A prayer room is made available to the children throughout the weekend. Set aside and created by one of the children’s pastors, children and adults alike can spend time in solitude, meditation, and prayer as they utilize the various prayer and worship stations in the room.
The first Kidfest was held in Arlington, Texas, under the direction of Steve Darnell, who was serving the Church of God in Texas as the Director of Youth and Christian Education. Kidfest has now expanded and includes events held in Kings Mill, Ohio (Midwest), Charlotte, North Carolina (Carolina), Irving, Texas (Frontier), Ft. Walton Beach, FL (Emerald Coast), and Gatlinburg, TN (Smoky Mountain).
Each event continues to grow annually. The spiritual climate of the events provides children the opportunity to experience God in a very real and personal way. Lives are being changed and challenged as they encounter His presence.
