Today Is My Birthday!

Today is my birthday. I’m not going to tell you how old I am. Let’s just say I’m older than most children’s pastors. Even at my age, I’ve noticed something. It makes me feel good when people remember my birthday. When people say “Happy Birthday” to me, I know they care enough to remember the date. If they go further and get me a card or take me to lunch or even buy me a token present, I feel even more special. If that’s true for an adult who’s been in children’s ministry for over twenty years (I got started late), how much more is it true for children.

The children in your ministry want to feel special. They want to know you remembered their birthday. They feel even more special if you take time to send them a card or call and wish them a Happy Birthday. It’s a little thing, but it’s important. If children know they’re important to the adults in their lives, they have an easier time understanding that God believes they are special.

If you’ve been too busy doing programs to do the little things like acknowledge children’s birthdays, it’s time to take a deep breath and remember that ministry isn’t about your programs. It’s about showing the love of God to your students.
